Zines
ongoing
I have been writing and self-publishing zines for nearly 15 years. A zine is a do-it-yourself (DIY) mini magazine. It can include artwork, writing, or both. In 2019, I started a drop-in free Zine Club in Hamilton with my friend Mariel Rutherford. We now run out of the Hamilton Central Public Library (55 York Blvd) on the second Tuesday of every month on the fourth floor and are joined by co-facilitators Raul Palacios and Maisie Belle. In 2022, Mariel and I and our friend Sahra Soudi took over coordinating an annual zine fair in Hamilton called Zineposium. The fair now hosts about 40 vendors and boasts over 500 visitors each November.
I often receive direct messages and emails of folks asking me to teach them how to make zines. I can’t teach this skill through direct messages or over email, and don’t have the capacity to meet up with community members 1-on-1. If you live in Hamilton, Ontario, I’d encourage you to visit Zine Club where I, or one of my co-facilitators would be happy to assist.
